The Engineering discipline of Chengdu University (CDU) has entered the global top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI), according to the data released by ESI in January 2022. This is the first CDU discipline in the global top 1% of ESI, marking a ground-breaking achievement. It indicates that the Engineering subject of CDU has become an international first-class discipline, and fully demonstrated its scientific strength and international influence. Other disciplines like Chemistry, Agriculture, Clinical Medicine, and Material Science are also approaching this line.

As revealed by Clarivate, during the period from January 1, 2011 to October 31, 2021, there are 416 high - level papers by the discipline of Engineering, with a total of 3,488 citations, 8.38 citations per paper and 20 highly cited and hot papers. As a newly listed university, the CDU ESI ranks 318th among 361 listed universities in China.

In recent years, CDU has been promoting its ESI ranks and developing toward a high-level university with its own characteristics by taking the discipline and content construction as its priority. In 2017, it was approved as the Doctoral authorized project construction unit of Sichuan Province. In 2020, it was listed as the "Priority Cultivation" university in the "Progressive Cultivation" Program of Sichuan Provincial doctoral authorized project construction unit. Over the past five years, the University has added a total of 20 categories of first-level master’s disciplines and professional degrees. The number of postgraduates on campus has increased by nearly 10 times, among which the number of international postgraduates has increased from 0 to 112. In addition, it has risen by more than 200 places in the ranking of mainstream universities in China. It has been listed on the World Top 1000 Universities for the first time by the Times Higher Education (THE), and has been ranked among the World Top 700 Universities by the International Nature Index. To further improve the international influence of its disciplines, the University has launched a "peak discipline plan" to strengthen its discipline construction by optimizing resource allocation, targetedly supporting strong disciplines, and continuously stimulating the discipline potential. The plan has also pushed for the continuous output of high-level scientific research achievements and the overall scientific research level of the University.
