On September 10, 2024, the final of the "My Story of Chinese Hanzi" International Competition was held at the Performance Hall of the Student Activity Center of Chengdu University. The event was hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, organized by the Chengdu People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, and co-organized by the Sichuan Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries and Chengdu University.
The event was attended by distinguished guests including Yan Dong, Vice President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; Wang Qian, Deputy Mayor of Chengdu; Tang Jilan, Vice President of the Sichuan Provincial People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; Jiang Bin, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Chengdu Municipal People's Government and Executive Vice President of the Chengdu People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries; and Zhu Ming, President of Chengdu University.
In his speech, Yan Dong emphasized the role of written language as a witness to history, a guardian of tradition, and a promoter of civilization. "Civilizations have become richer and more colorful with exchanges and mutual learning. Such exchanges and mutual learning form an important drive for human progress and global peace and development." Wang Qian encouraged contestants from different countries to showcase their talents and demeanor in the competition held in Chengdu, where they were asked to give speeches in Chinese on the theme of "Trust." He advised the contestants to seek wisdom and intellectual nourishment from various civilizations and learn from each other to make collective progress. He concluded by wishing that their journey to Chengdu would become a cherished memory in their lives.
In March 2023, President Xi Jinping first proposed the Global Civilization Initiative, advocating for coexistence and mutual learning among civilizations. The 2024 "My Story of Chinese Hanzi" International Competition, themed "Trust," aims to further convey the core values of Chinese culture, foster global consensus on cooperation, and promote shared values among all humanity, as well as the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind.
The event commenced with a unique Sichuan face-changing performance. Ten contestants from the United States, the Republic of the Congo, Egypt, France/South Africa, Pakistan, Russia, Serbia, Sweden, Togo, and Vietnam delivered speeches centered on the theme "Trust." Following the speeches, they participated in a drawing to each answer an interactive question. Additionally, an overseas award winner from the Republic of Korea delivered an acceptance speech on stage. The event also featured special performances by Chengdu University students, including the song "Enjoy the Sunshine in Shambhala" and a folk dance medley titled "Blooming."
As a co-organizer of the event, Chengdu University fully participated in the preparation and organization of the event and organized rich cultural experience activities for guests and contestants. The Chengdu University students actively engaged in the event, showcasing the vibrant campus culture and the rich diversity of ethnic traditions. This further highlighted the university's role as a platform for international cultural exchange in Chengdu. Chengdu University remains committed to building bridges for cultural communication between China and foreign countries and contributing to the dialogue and cooperation among world civilizations.
