On March 18, 2022, the medals of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021 were officially released, including "Rongguang", literally "The Light of Chengdu", and other award series designs for the event. The Shu brocade ribbons, an important part of the medal, also attracted much attention.
Featuring red and blue patterns of Chengdu's city flower hibiscus, the Golden Sun Bird, the checkerboard, and the emblem of the event, the ribbon uses the craftsmanship and materials of Shu brocade, a national intangible cultural heritage, for the first time. Its design combines traditional culture with modern sports, and demonstrates the aesthetic charm of oriental culture.

The chief designer of the medal's ribbon is Professor Ma Liwa at the School of Fine Arts and Design, Chengdu University.
"Shu brocade has a long history, known as the 'the world’s mother brocade'. It is one of the four famous brocades and also a characteristic business card of Chengdu, which is ideal for the ribbon design," said Professor Ma. She introduced that the Shu brocade weaving industry in Chengdu has been developed since the Han Dynasty. The imperial court set up the Brocade Official specializing in brocade weaving in Chengdu, thus making Chengdu known as the City of Brocade Official. It became the only city with "brocade" in its name. The ribbon is exquisitely woven with a graceful palette. The use of Shu broad to the medal ribbon of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021 not only highlights the cultural characteristics of the city but also incorporates the ancient Shu culture.
