On March 29, Times Higher Education (THE) released its 2023 China Subject Ratings.
A total of eight disciplines of Chengdu University (CDU) were on the list, namely, Materials Science and Engineering (A-), Mechanical Engineering (B), Food Science and Engineering (B), Biological Engineering (B), Nursing (B), Civil Engineering (C+), Clinical Medicine (C+), and Pharmacy (C+). CDU has made further progress in the number and level of shortlisted disciplines compared to the previous rating, which directly shows the achievements made by the university in disciplines building.
CDU has been focusing on its goal of becoming a first-class, internationally renowned, and application-oriented city university with distinctive characteristics. In recent years, the university has made targeted efforts to align its development to regional social and economic development. This has been achieved through planning the key discipline building, redefining discipline development orientation, optimizing the discipline structure, highlighting the development of advantageous and characteristic disciplines, and continuously enriching the connotation of discipline building, which has contributed to the continuous enhancement of its discipline strength.

It is said that the data used for the China Subject Ratings are sourced via various channels, including THE World University Rankings 2023, THE China Reputation Ratings 2022 and 2023, THE Academic Reputation Ratings 2021 and 2022, and the Elsevier bibliometric database. The ratings provide a comprehensive and balanced comparison of research-oriented universities by measuring their core missions, including teaching, research, international visions, and knowledge transfer. The performance indicators used in the ratings cover five areas, namely teaching, research, citations, international visions, and industry revenue. As a result, the ratings are recognized by students, scholars, university leaders, the education community, and the government. The ratings, which were launched in 2020, serve as the only performance evaluation form for Chinese universities that is based on the 83 discipline classification criteria by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China with reference to global universities. The performance of these universities is compared with an A+ to C- scoring system.
