Since its first release in 2015, Shanghai Ranking's Best Chinese Universities Ranking, formerly known as "China's Best Universities Ranking", has gained widespread attention and recognition from individuals and institutions both inside and outside the higher education community. Known for its professionalism, objectiveness, and transparency, the ranking has become a leading brand in China's university ranking with significant social influence and authoritative reference value.

In recent years, CDU has been adhering to the Party's educational policy and undertaking the fundamental task of fostering morality and cultivating talent. The university has also been focused on application-oriented development and highlighting its distinctive characteristics as a city university. It has fully implemented its strategic plan in three stages during the past decade, and has made significant breakthroughs in talent strategy, characteristics strategy, and internationalization strategy, which significantly improved its comprehensive strength. The settlement of the Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games Athletes' Village in CDU has significantly improved the university's school-running conditions and influence. CDU has made significant breakthroughs in four authoritative world university rankings, namely QS, Shanghai Ranking, Times Higher Education, and US News. Three of its subjects have been listed among the top 1% subjects of Essential Science Indicators (ESI), and 27 subjects have been selected for the Double 10,000 Initiative for first-class undergraduate major construction. The university has also been included in the national "111 Program" as a discipline innovation and talent introduction base. In the latest Nature Index of 2022, CDU has achieved a new high, ranking 140th among the colleges and universities in the Chinese mainland and 5th among those in Sichuan Province.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the university will focus on cultivating high-quality applied talent, highlight high-quality development, and use reform and innovation as a fundamental driving force to promote school-university integration, as well as industry-education integration. By aligning to advanced universities and striving to build itself into a first-class university, the university has been continuously improving its overall school-running strength and international influence, aiming to build a first-class application-oriented city university with distinctive characteristics that match Chengdu's development potential.
