Recently, a graduate student studying at the Key Laboratory of Coarse Cereals Processing (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs), Chengdu University, published a paper entitled "Coarse Cereals and Legume Grains Exert Beneficial Effects through Their Interaction with Gut Microbiota: A Review" on the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry of American Chemical Society, a Q1 top journal in the agribusiness field. Graduate student Yao Zhendong enrolled in 2018 and teacher Cao Yanan are the co-first authors, and Professor Peng Lianxin is the correspondent author. It was selected to be the front cover paper of that issue.

Coarse cereals and legume grains (CCLGs) which are rich in specific macro- and functional elements that are considered important dietary components for maintaining human health can meet the varying nutritional needs of different groups of people. The paper systematically introduced the nutrition and functional elements of CCLGs, emphatically expounded the interplay mechanism between CCLGs and gut microbiota to exert the health benefits and at the same time illustrated the bottlenecks and development trends in the CCLGs nutrition research, which was of guiding significance for the development and quality evaluation of targeted nutritional products of CCLGs. This research was funded by the key R&D project of the Science & Technology Department of Sichuan Province and the National Key R&D Program of China.

With the strong support of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China and Chengdu University, the Key Laboratory of Coarse Cereals Processing, since its approved construction in December 2016, has carried out multiple cross-disciplinary pieces of research around the whole industry chain covering high-quality special variety development by selection and high-yield cultivation of CCLGs, intensive processing and industrialization demonstration of CCLGs and nutrition interplay mechanism of CCLGs, contributing to a series of research results. Among them, during the "13th Five-Year Plan" period, Chengdu University, as the first unit, won 1 first prize and 2 second prizes for the Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award, effectively promoting the development of the CCLGs industry. The selection as the front cover paper on SCI Q1 top journal marks a breakthrough by the graduate students in Chengdu University on paper presentation. The paper shows a representative achievement of Chengdu University's graduate education.
