History
The College, merged with several municipal normal schools, including Chengdu Normal School, Xindu Normal School, Chengdu Normal School for Preschool Education, and Chengdu Institute of Education, was officially named the College of Teachers of Chengdu University in November 2015, with a history that can be traced back to the “Shuxing Girl’s School”founded by Mr. Lu Yizhi in 1904.
Chengdu Normal School and Xindu Normal School, founded in 1904, were well-known training bases for primary school teachers in Sichuan Province. Chengdu Normal School for Preschool Education, established in 1942, was a well-known talent training base for preschool education in Southwest China and even the whole country. Chengdu Institute of Education, founded in 1984, was an important base for post-service training of principals and teachers of primary and secondary schools in Chengdu.
Status Quo
The College of Teachers has 104 faculty members. Among the 82 full-time teachers, there are 9 professors, 41 associate professors, 26 master supervisors. There are 59 teachers with master's degrees or above (including 33 doctors), nearly 20 teachers with overseas education background. More than 70% of the teachers are dual-qualified. There are about 2,200 students (undergraduate and master) in the College.
The college has four undergraduate specialties, namely Preschool Education, Primary Education, Special Education, and Applied Psychology. Preschool Education and Primary Education are both provincial characteristic specialties and provincial excellent teacher training program specialties; Preschool Education is the first-class specialty at the provincial level, and the Primary Education, the application-oriented demonstration specialty at the provincial level.
The College is an authorized point to confer master degree in Education, covering all four specialties of the College.
The college has achieved remarkable results in educational reform and personnel training. The college has won several major awards such as Sichuan Province Higher Education Teaching Achievement Award, Chengdu Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, Sichuan Province General Education Teaching Achievement Award, national general education achievement awards, and provincial general education achievement awards. The college has set up national excellent resources sharing courses, excellent online open courses of colleges and universities of Sichuan Province, excellent resources sharing courses of Sichuan Province, and courses of ideological and political construction in Sichuan Province. The College publishes 28 textbooks in the class-A publishing house.
The college has outstanding achievements in scientific research. Relying on the academic platforms of Key Discipline of Chengdu (Pedagogy), the Center for Early Childhood Education Research of Sichuan, Research Center for Integrated Urban-Rural Education Development, and Sichuan Youth Sex Education Popularization Base, the College won 2 provincial awards and 32 municipal awards for achievements in philosophy and social science during the 13th Five Year Plan period. The College has 42 research projects at and above the provincial and ministerial level, publishes 73 important papers and 58 works, and accumulates RMB 12.482 million of research funds.
The College has achieved remarkable results in serving the society. The College has implemented the strategy of university-city integration and innovated the implementation of cooperation projects between the university and the region, such as playing a leading role in establishing and running the primary school and kindergarten affiliated to Chengdu University, and setting up the “doctor workstation”. Based on the post-service training platforms, such as Chengdu University Training Center for Continuing Education of Primary and Secondary School Teachers in Sichuan Province, Sichuan Special Education Teacher Training Center, Chengdu Education System Cadre Training Center, and Chengdu Kindergarten Backbone Teachers Training Center, the College has undertaken 52 national, provincial, municipal and district/county teachers training projects, with 9,729 trainees in total during the 13th Five Year Plan period. The College has promoted its personnel training, academic research, and social services to a new level by means of strengthening exchanges and cooperation with universities in the United States, New Zealand, Thailand, Czech Republic, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and South Korea and gathering various resources.
Features
First, the College has a rich history and a wide range of alumni resources. Based on the comprehensive strength of the normal education for 100 years, more than 80% of principals of public kindergartens and about 70% of principals of public primary schools in Chengdu are alumni of the College.
Second, the teachers of the College pay attention to the cultivation of ethics and emphasize practice in teaching. With the cultivation of “Four Haves”teachers in the new era as the core mission, the College constructs the mode of “two outstanding and three high-quality”, pays attention to teachers’ exemplary character, emphasizes teachers’ethics, and strengthens the practical application. Relying on the whole-process reflective practice system, the students trained by the College are compassionate and versatile, with a strong teacher temperament and high professional loyalty, and are highly praised by society.
Third, the College has cooperated with multilateral resources for in-depth development and is very enthusiastic about providing services to the local community. The College fully integrates the resources of the government, universities, industries, think tanks, and overseas to realize interconnection. While promoting talent training in a coordinated manner, the College provides in-depth services for the local community by relying on innovative forms such as the "doctor workstation", which brings the College a good social reputation.
The College of Teachers of Chengdu University has always taken “teaching students to seek the truth and learn to be a real person”as its pedagogic creed, “teachers with a high level of knowledge and noble personality” as its action criterion, and “paying attention to the foundation, enhancing the ability and cultivating students with special abilities” as its talent training goal, and inherits and carries forward the century-old normal education brand. Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, and based on the basic attributes of an applied city university, the College will build itself into an important base for training high-quality applied talents in the field of basic education, which is rooted in Chengdu, leading in Sichuan, facing the whole country and keeping pace with the world.
