The College of Physical Education was established in 2010, and was approved by the Ministry of Education to establish a“High-level Wushu Sports Team” in the same year. It is the vice-chairman unit of the National School Physical Education Leagues (Physical Education), the vice-chairman unit of aerobics and rhythmic gymnastics branches of the Federation of University Sports of China, the vice-chairman unit of the Sports Branch of Sichuan Higher Education Association, and the vice-director unit of Sichuan Sports Teaching Steering Committee. It has mntained a high academic status and influence among sports institutions inside and outside Sichuan. With the honor of the chairman unit of College Physical Education of Sichuan and the settlement of Sichuan Fitness Qigong Research and Training Base in this College, the College has become the fastest-growing professional department in college physical education in Sichuan.
The College adheres to the motto of “building up health with perseverance and becoming strong with daily efforts”and the operation philosophy of “running the school based on good teaching, strengthening the school through scientific research, and making a name of the school with characteristics”. The College also undertakes the construction and management of Chengdu Football Academy. There are three offices, three departments, one division, Chengdu Football Academy, Venue Management Section, Competition Training Section and other departments in the College.
The College of Physical Education provides three undergraduate specialties in Social Sports Instruction and Management, Physical Education and Leisure Sports, and one postgraduate specialty in Physical Education. In 2019, its Physical Education was included in the “Double Ten Thousand Plan”of the Ministry of Education as the construction point of first-class undergraduate specialties. It offers characteristic courses such as outdoor development, dragon-lion dance, community fitness coaching, sports somatic science, sports medicine, track and field, gymnastics, Wushu & Sanda, aerobics, Taekwondo, artistic gymnastics and yoga.
There are 87 faculty members (including distinguished professors), including 9 professors (4 distinguished professors), 19 associate professors, 2 senior coaches, and 1 person entitled to special allowance from the Chengdu government. There are 51 people with a master's degree or above (5 doctors and 9 doctoral candidates), and 33 people under the age of 35. Among the teachers, there are 2 international referees, 5 national referees and 17 national first-level referees. There is one national A-level coach (football) and over 40 national first-level fitness instructors. They have refereed many international and domestic competitions.
The College houses the key bases of humanities and social sciences of the Education Department of Sichuan Province, namely, “Sichuan Leisure Sports Industry Development Research Center”and “National Children's Sports Development Research Center”． In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 50 scientific research projects, including one at the national level and 36 at the ministerial and provincial levels. The College has published over 10 personal monographs and professional textbooks, and has published over 60 papers in influential core journals in China.
Chengdu University is now a pilot university for high-level football teams of the Ministry of Education of China, and houses the training bases for the National Fitness and Bodybuilding Team and the Sichuan Provincial Aerobics Team. A number of sports teams of the College, including fitness Qigong, aerobics, cheerleading, Wushu Sanda and Taekwondo, have won more than 1,000 first and second prizes in international, national and provincial competitions in the past five years. The Athletes’Village of the 31st Chengdu 2021 FISU World University Games has been built in Chengdu University, which will boost the development of the College of Physical Education.
