About:
The College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Chengdu University was founded in 1978, formerly known as the "Department of Foreign Languages of Chengdu University", and was renamed in 2006. At present, the College has the English Department, Thai Department, Business English Department and College English Teaching Department. It offers three undergraduate specialties — English, Thai, and Business English, and common foreign language courses as well as elective courses of second foreign languages in Thai, Japanese, and French etc. for all undergraduates and postgraduates across the university. The College has the Sichuan Provincial Research Institute of Thai Studies - a recorded Center for State and Regional Studies of the Ministry of Education, and the Key Research Base of State and Regional Studies in Sichuan. In 2008, the College took the lead in offering an undergraduate specialty in Thai in Sichuan Province. In 2014, the College set up the Princess Sirindhorn Language Classroom. In 2016, the College began to enroll postgraduates in Translation and Interpretation. The College is characterized by its internationalization of talent cultivation. In recent years, the employment rate of its graduates has remained above 97%, and the rate of students pursuing master’s degrees both in China and internationally has been increasing each year.
Faculty:
There are 104 full-time teachers in the College, including 39 teachers with senior professional titles and 12 with doctoral degrees. Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand was appointed as an Honorary Professor of Chengdu University. President Wang Qingyuan of Chengdu University is Director of the Sichuan Provincial Research Institute of Thai Studies. There are more than 20 foreign teachers from the United States, Britain, Thailand, South Korea, Japan and other countries. Most teachers have overseas learning or work experience. The number of high-level foreign experts is constantly increasing. The College also has teaching teams of convention and exhibition interpretation, cross-border e-commerce, Chinese international education and college English, as well as research teams of Thai studies and translation research.
Academics and Research:
The scientific research of the College has its own characteristics. In recent years, the College has undertaken or participated in a number of research projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China, Humanities & Social Sciences Research Program of the Ministry of Education, and Philosophy and Social Sciences Research Projects of Sichuan Province. The College has a great impact on the academic fields of literary research, translation theory and practice research, cross-cultural communication and cultural communication research. It enjoys a comparatively high academic reputation in Japanese literature research, and has attracted wide attention in its state and regional studies of Thailand.
International Exchange and Collaboration:
The College has been actively promoting international cooperation and exchanges. The College offers joint postgraduate programs in knowledge management, language and communication, logistics and supply chains with Chiang Mai University, National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), and Naresuan University in Thailand.
It continuously explores the talent training mechanism based on university-city integration. In recent years, the College has established an internship base for international exchanges and multilingual services with Chengdu Municipal Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and Pengzhou Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Bureau, and a cross-border e-commerce internship base with China Telecom's "Tyfo.Com". Furthermore, it has established cooperation partnerships of talent cultivation with Xinhua Winshare Publishing and Media Co., Ltd., and Chengdu T.Y. Co., Ltd.
Goals:
At present, the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures of Chengdu University is actively exploring a new talent training model of "foreign language +". By continuously strengthening education and teaching reforms and highlighting the goals of cultivating talents with "cross-cultural background, wide-ranging knowledge, foreign languages proficiency, and distinctive strengths", it is committed to providing the country with applied foreign language professionals with international vision, Chinese patriotism and humanistic qualities that can be conducive to the implementation of the One Belt and One Road initiative.
