The College of Literature and Journalism was established in 2006, and its predecessor was the Chinese Language and Literature Department born at the same time when the university was established in 1978. Many famous scholars once taught in the college, including Professor Bai Dunren, an experienced expert in classical literature and cultural studies, Professor Zhong Shuliang, a well-known poet and master of Du Fu's poetry studies, Professor Xie Yuheng, one of the main editors of the first Introduction to Literature since the founding of China, Professor Chang Chongyi, one of the pioneers of modern secretarial studies in China, Professor Zeng Yongcheng, who has made great achievements in the fields of aesthetics and ecological literature and art, forming a fine tradition of rigorous academic research and meticulous education.
The college currently has 69 faculty members. Among them, there are 9 professors, 22 associate professors, 31 doctors, 22 dual-qualified teachers. Cao Shunqing, a distinguished professor of the Changjiang Scholars Program of the Ministry of Education, a national famous teacher, a Cross-century Outstanding Talent of the Ministry of Education, and an academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, is the honorary dean of the college.
In recent years, the college has obtained 13 projects supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, including 1 achievement included in the China Social Science Library, 26 provincial and ministerial scientific research and educational reform projects. Teachers in the college have obtained 9 provincial and ministerial awards, including 1 first prize and 1 second prize of the Sichuan Provincial Social Science Outstanding Achievement Award, 1 second prize of the Sichuan Excellent Teaching Achievement Award, and 16 Chengdu Philosophy and Social Science Awards. It has a science popularization base for "Chinese Culture and Urban Inheritance" in Sichuan Province, and joins hands with the Publicity Department of the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee to establish the "Research Institute of Tianfu Culture".
In recent years, the college has been awarded the "Excellent Service Party Organization in Colleges and Universities of Sichuan Province" by the Education Working Committee of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, "Chengdu Model Collective" by the CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee and Chengdu Municipal People's Government, "Chengdu Advanced Workers' Home" by Chengdu Federation of Trade Unions, "Excellent Grassroots Party Organizations" of the local education system and other commendations.
The college is committed to cultivating high-quality applied talents who can not only inherit and spread China's excellent culture, but also make contributions to Chengdu's pursuit of modernization and internationalization. The college currently has four undergraduate specialties, of which the Chinese Language and Literature Specialty is Chengdu University’s key brand one with a solid foundation; the Radio and Television Specialty, established in 1994, is a pilot one of an outstanding talent education training program; the highly international specialty of Chinese International Education is the key construction one in Chengdu; the Network and New Media Specialty started to recruit students in 2017, with the strong momentum of development. The college launched a Postgraduate Drama Program for one term and a Postgraduate Radio and Television Program for two terms. The newly-established master's degree program in Journalism and Communications started to enroll students in 2019.
Through the college's cooperation with Confucius Institute established at the University of New Hampshire in the United States, Waikato Institute of Technology in New Zealand, Yeungnam University (including postgraduate education) in South Korea, and many universities in Thailand, more than 30 teachers have taught, studied, obtained training, learned as visiting scholars, and participated in international academic exchanges abroad. Meanwhile, groups of students received internship offers from schools at all levels in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand every year.
The college has invested more than RMB 5 million in the modern experiment, practice space, and training for improving students' practical ability. It has 36 off-campus internship practice bases including all units subordinate to Chengdu TV Station and Chengdu Media Group.
So far, the college has cultivated more than 6,000 outstanding talents for the society, and outstanding alumni are scattered in various industries at home and abroad. In recent years, the employment rate of graduates who successfully found a job right after graduation has remained above 95%.
