C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40) hosted the second global competition of Students Reinventing Cities. From March 7 to 8, the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of Chengdu Municipal Committee and the Urban-Rural Community Development and Administration Commission of CPC Chengdu Municipal Committee, in cooperation with the C40 publicity team, came to universities to encourage young students to actively participate in the competition to tackle climate change and reinvent cities in cooperation. In Students Reinventing Cities, international cities provide urban community projects that are willing to be developed or transformed, and teams from universities around the world provide cities with green solutions through the competition.
In the selection of cities, 12 international cities, including Chengdu, Zhenjiang, Amman, Barcelona, Durban, Freetown, Lisbon, Melbourne, Milan, New Orleans, Rome and Sao Paulo, stood out, whose community projects were selected as the competition topics. It was the first time that Chinese cities had participated in the competition. Faced with the increasingly severe climate crisis, green and low-carbon communities have become an important topic in the world. China is also speeding up to achieve the carbon emissions peak and carbon neutrality. Chinese cities, represented by Chengdu, have jointly built cities of green development through international cooperation, showing and sharing Chinese cities' active exploration at the community level to global cities.
12 Cities Selected for Second C40 Students Reinventing Cities
Students Reinventing Cities has entered the stage of student team collection, aiming to collect solutions from young student teams around the world. Youth are an indispensable force for global cooperation in addressing climate change. They will become witnesses, participants and designers of urban green transformation. Through the competition, universities and students around the world can have an in-depth understanding of the policies and trends for tackling climate change. With their feasible innovative solutions for cities, they will show the belief, creativity, and action of youth in participating in climate and environmental governance and reshaping beautiful cities. Chengdu and C40 welcome young people from all over the world to actively participate in the competition to boost Chengdu's green, thriving, and sustainable development and to jointly promote Chengdu's urban innovation.
In recent years, Chengdu has been continuously promoting and participating in international cooperation in the field of climate change, providing useful references for global cities to tackle climate change with Chengdu's wisdom and vivid case. In 2022, Chengdu issued the Work Plan for Pilot Projects of Near-zero Carbon Emission Zones in Chengdu. For the first time, it takes the construction of near-zero carbon communities as one of the pilot projects of near-zero carbon emission zones and defines the goal of completing no less than 30 near-zero carbon communities by 2025. In the same year, Chengdu also joined the "C40 Green and Thriving Neighbourhoods" Global Forum, becoming one of the first pilot cities of "Green and Thriving Neighbourhoods" in the world, working with the international community to promote the construction of near-zero carbon communities, and exploring the way for large cities to achieve green, thriving and sustainable development. Chengdu expects young people from all over the world to actively participate in Students Reinventing Cities to renew Chengdu with the strength of youth.
