Thippawan Supamikitja, Consul General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Chengdu, Visits Chengdu University

On the afternoon of February 25, Consul General Thippawan Supamikitja and Consul Waruntorn Kochtaropas from the Consulate General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Chengdu visited Chengdu University. President Wang Qingyuan met the guests in the VIP room. Vice President Peng Xiaolin attended the event.

On behalf of the University, Wang Qingyuan extended a warm welcome to the visit of the Consul General. He also gave the general introduction of Chengdu University, its international development and its cooperation with universities in Thailand. Mr. Wang also introduced that the university had developed rapidly in recent years, with the implementation of the "internationalization" development strategy, to incorporate the "high standard implementation of first-class international projects" into the goal of constructing a "six first-class" university (the six aspects include school philosophy, teaching equipment, campus environment, university spirit and style of study, teacher quality, education and teaching quality) in the next five years, and to implement the project of connecting a college with a world-class discipline (university). At present, Chengdu University has established cooperative relations with 121 universities and institutions in 35 countries and regions. Since 2006, Chengdu University has established friendly and cooperative relations with 27 universities in Thailand such as Chulalongkorn University, Chiang Mai University, Ubon Ratchathani Rajabhat University and Silpakorn University. At present, Chengdu University is focusing on promoting cooperation with Naresuan University to build overseas branch campus and promote the international mobility of teachers and students between China and Thailand. As the host university for the athletes village of the 31st FISU Summer World University Games Chengdu 2021, Wang Qingyuan hoped that the Consul General could give more support to the higher education exchanges and cooperation between Sichuan Province and Thailand, to further deepen the exchanges and cooperation between Chengdu University and prestigious universities in Thailand, and continue to support the construction of Sichuan Provincial Research Institute of Thai Studies, and promote faculty exchange, student exchange and academic research cooperation between Chengdu University and universities and institutions of higher education of Thailand in various fields.

Thippawan Supamikitja said that Chengdu University attaches great importance to the cooperation with Thailand. Chengdu University started to offer Thai language major in 2008, making it the first university in Sichuan Province to offer Thai language as a undergraduate program. In 2011, Princess Sirindhorn of the Kingdom of Thailand visited Chengdu University and was appointed as an honorary professor of this major, which further deepened the educational exchanges and cooperation between China and Thailand. The Consulate General of the Kingdom of Thailand in Chengdu will, as always, attach great importance to the exchange and cooperation with Chengdu University. She hopes that Chengdu University will provide more policy support for scholarships for Thai students. In addition, Thippawan Supamikitja thanked Chengdu University for donating epidemic prevention materials to Chiang Mai University during the COVID-19 pandemic and fully affirmed the cooperation between the two universities. She believed that more universities in Thailand would establish cooperation with Chengdu University when the pandemic is over.

   Thippawan Supamikitja also witnessed the online signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Chengdu University and Prince of Songkla University Phuket Campus, and congratulated the two universities on the renewal of cooperation. She also sat in on the classes of the Thai Department of the College of Foreign Languages and Cultures, visited the Thai Studies Center and had discussions with representatives of teachers and students from Thailand.

Establish in 1967, Prince of Songkla University is located in Changwat Songkla in southern Thailand. Over the past 50 years, Prince of Songkla University has become the top university, as well as the largest and most prestigious key national higher education institution in southern Thailand. It is also a comprehensive university that integrates high-level teaching and academic research, and has trained a large number of talents in various regions of Thailand, especially in southern Thailand.  Prince of Songkla University has faculties of agriculture, science, natural resources, humanities and social sciences, education, management, environmental supervision and construction engineering, medical science, graduate school, computing center, etc.. Prince of Songkla University has five campuses. From 1965 to 1971, the main campus was located in Changwat Pattani. It is now located in Hatyai, Changwat Songkla in southern Thailand. The rest of campuses include Phuket Campus, Surat Thani Campus and Trang Campus.  


In 2008, Chengdu University and Prince of Songkla University (Phuket Campus) signed the MOU to officially establish a friendly and cooperative relationship. This renewal marks a new start for the cooperation between the two universities. It is expected that the two universities will carry out student exchange, faculty exchange and scientific research cooperation in national and provincial first-class undergraduate programs such as Tourism Management and Thai.
