The College of Chinese & ASEAN Arts was established on November 19, 2017. It is an independent and fully public comprehensive art college approved by the Chengdu Municipal People’s Government to practice the spirit of the 19th CPC National Congress and the Belt and Road Initiative so as to accelerate the development of Chengdu into a cultural and creative center of western China and a world-famous cultural city, and established on the basis of the existing arts department of Chengdu University in accordance with the new system and mechanism. The first dean is Yu Junjian, a famous musician. Peng Jixiang, a famous art educator, and Xu Peidong, a famous composer, are distinguished academic deans of the College. The College has more than 200 faculty members, including more than 60 professors and associate professors, and more than 80 artists and art educators such as Feng Jicai, Tseten Dolma, Wang Xiaotang, Wang Cizhao, Feng Yuan, Feng Shuangbai, Jidi Majia, Zhong Chengxiang, Jackie Chan, Li Guyi, Zhang Huijun, Su Zhiwu, Chen Kaige, Pan Gongkai, Han Meilin and Qu Cong, who are distinguished consultants, academic members, and visiting professors of the College. The College consists of four academic departments, namely, the College of Fine Arts and Design, the College of Film and Animation, the College of Music and Dance, and the International Department. Painter Fan Yang, Dancer Shen Peiyi, and Singer Liu Hegang are hired as deans of the schools respectively.
There are more than 3,000 full-time undergraduates, postgraduates and international degree students. The College has nine undergraduate specialties, including visual communication design, environmental design, product design, animation, painting, broadcast and TV directing, music performance, dance performance and digital media technology, and one master’s degree authorization point of art, covering four research fields: art design, fine arts, radio and television and music performance. With Silpakorn University, Chiang Mai University, Payap University, School of the Arts of Universiti Sains Malaysia and Harbin Conservatory of Music, the College carries out joint programs for bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees. Animation, visual communication design and product design are five-star specialties, of which animation is a national characteristic one. Broadcast and TV directing is a comprehensive reform pilot specialty and a four-star one in Sichuan Province. The College has four Sichuan provincial high-quality courses and four Chengdu municipal high-quality courses. The College has a dozen teaching and research platforms, including a national practice and education base, a Key Research Base of Philosophy and Social Sciences in Sichuan, "Sichuan Animation Research Center" (the only animation research center in China), "Sichuan Animation and Game Collaborative Innovation Center, which was included in 2011 Sichuan Provincial Collaborative Innovation Center Program, an Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Higher Education Institutions in Sichuan, and Chengdu Original Animation Center.
Over the past three years, the College has been authorized with more than 20 general and artistic projects by the National Social Science Fund of China and China National Arts Fund. In addition, the College has more than 20 provincial-level projects and more than 100 bureau-level projects. It has also won multiple awards, including four philosophy awards in Sichuan Province and Chengdu City, more than 10 Red Dot Design Awards in Germany, and more than 300 other awards. It has published thousands of articles and works, including 300 articles in CSSCI and PKU journals, with over 200 invention patents. The College and China International Radio Press jointly published the bimonthly journal of Chinese and Foreign Arts Studies. By leveraging its rich resources of global famous artists and art educators, the College successively held “Yu Junjian Folk Vocal Music Advanced Training Course”and “Fan Yang Painting Advanced Training Course” The students of the vocal music course won the Golden Bell Award of the Folk Group in the 12th Chinese Golden Bell Awards for Music. The College took the lead in setting up the Chengdu College Students Choir, and won the Gold Award and the Best Modern Works Interpretation Award in the 10th World Peace Choir Festival in Vienna. The College has been awarded the first prize in dance, chorus, and musicals of the College Students Art Festival of Sichuan Province for four consecutive years, and has been awarded the first prize in dance of the National College Students Art Festival for three consecutive years.
Since its establishment, the College has held a series of activities that have a nation-wide influence in China. For instance, the College has held three consecutive“Folk Tenor”concerts and Chinese Folk Vocal Tenor Art Forum, four consecutive Chinese Animation Annual Meetings, and two consecutive China-ASEAN Youth Gala activities. It has successfully held many events, such as the Academic Summit of Chinese-ASEAN Culture and Arts Research, the Chinese Drama Campus Day, the Awards Ceremony of the Actors of China, Chengdu Sino-French International Art Festival, China-ASEAN Art Lectures, sketch activities of hundreds of artists in western Sichuan Plateau, ASEAN-China Youth Summer Camp, and Singularity Art Dialogue with Claude Monet--Exhibition of Modern Art Works.
The College is currently running in Mt. Fonghuang Park Campus and Chengdu University Campus. In 2021, the College will move into the new campus of Shiling as a whole. The new campus covers an area of about 175,000 square meters, with a total construction area of 189,000 square meters, including an art center, concert hall, art museum, library and gymnasium, the College of Fine Arts and Design, College of Film and Animation, College of Music and Dance, International Department, public teaching buildings, administrative office buildings, expert apartments, student dormitories, student canteens, auxiliary buildings, and gardens.
As a major cultural and educational construction project in Chengdu, the College will take advantage of the strategic opportunity of the Belt and Road Initiative, the strong support from Chengdu, a central city of China, the academic resources of a comprehensive university and the gathering of many famous artists to promote its construction and development. The College is determined to become a high-level comprehensive art college that matches the status of Chengdu as a city with a new development concept, has an important influence on the countries along the Belt and Road, especially in ASEAN countries, and has outstanding competitive advantages in China.
