The predecessor of the School of Mechanical Engineering was the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which was founded at the beginning of Chengdu University's establishment in 1978, and one of the four undergraduate programs that the university offered in its first year. Over more than 40 years of development, the School of Mechanical Engineering has evolved into an engineering school with a high quality teaching workforce, a variety of disciplines and specialties, excellent scientific research and teaching conditions and a high-level teaching and scientific research.
Faculty
The School currently has 86 full-time and part-time faculty members, 64 of whom are full-time teachers. The faculty team consists of 11 professors, 27 associate professors, 5 distinguished foreign professors, 5 distinguished research fellows/associate research fellows, 1 national-level expert with the title of the "National Distinguished Young Scholars", 2 provincial academic and technical leaders. More than 64% of teachers have doctoral degrees.
Academics
The School now has 4 undergraduate majors, of which Mechanical Design and Manufacturing and Automation, Material Forming and Control Engineering are the Yi Ben undergraduate majors (the first batch of universities for students to apply for), while Measurement and Control Technology and Instruments and Vehicle Engineering are the Er Ben undergraduate majors(the second batch of universities for students to apply for). In addition, the school has a first-level master's degree program in Materials and Chemical Engineering and master training programs in the fields of Agricultural Engineering and Information Technology. Currently, it has nearly 1600 undergraduates and postgraduates.
Research
The School now has six offices, namely, the Administrative Office, the Teaching and Scientific Research Office, the Student Affairs Office, the Discipline and Major Development Office, the Foreign Cooperation Office and the International Cooperation Office. The School has three departments of electromechanical engineering, material engineering and vehicle engineering. It has established a national engineering practice education center, a provincial engineering technology research center, a municipal joint school-enterprise laboratory, a school-level interdisciplinary research center and a college student innovation and entrepreneurship park. It has nearly 12,000m2 of independent space for scientific research, experiments, practical training and administration.
In recent years, the School has undertaken more than 20 national scientific research projects including national key projects and has won 7 national, provincial and ministerial awards, including the National Science and Technology Invention Award. Focusing on developing the disciplines of materials and machinery, it has undertaken 3 national teaching quality projects, winning 2 first prizes of the Provincial Excellent Teaching Achievements Award, and the title of a national pilot of "Excellent Engineer Education and Training Plan" in the majors of Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation. Its students have won nearly 50 awards in national discipline competitions, and the graduate employment rate has remained above 95%.
International Exchange and Collaboration
In recent years, the School has actively organised a series of international exchange activities, such as the Sino-foreign "3+1+2" joint training program and undergraduate exchange programs, with foreign universities such as German's Technische Universität Clausthal, Silpakorn University of Thailand, etc. Meanwhile, it has actively engaged with world-renowned universities, such as South Korea's Kyonggi University and Australia's RMIT University. It employs high-end foreign experts from famous universities or institutions, such as the USA's Georgia Tech, Australia's RMIT University, and International Association of Advanced Materials (IAAM), and introduces a French research fellow to carry out scientific research and promote international communication as a full-time employee.
Goals
Under the guidance of Xi Jinping's Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics in a New Era, the School insists on taking moral education as the fundamental task, starting from transforming educational thought and concepts, and focusing on discipline development. Based on scientific research, it centers on undergraduate teaching, works to meet social needs, and takes high-quality applied talent training as its goal and tenet, striving to become an important base for personnel training, scientific research, local services and technology development geared to the advanced manufacturing industry.
