College of Food and Biological Engineering

History

The College of Food and Biological Engineering develops with Chengdu University. In the beginning, it was the Chemistry specialty under the College of Teachers, and then became the Chemistry Department, Food Engineering Department, Department of Light Chemical Engineering, and Department of Biological Engineering. After the overall integration of resources in 2006, the former Department of Biological Engineering grew into a college, renamed the College of Bioindustry, the College of Biological Engineering, the College of Pharmacy and Biological Engineering, and the College of Food and Biological Engineering successively. Since the establishment of the Chengdu University, the College has delivered more than 5000 graduates suitable for local economic construction and social development.

Current State

The College has five undergraduate specialties, including Food Science and Engineering, Biological Engineering, Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Engineering, and Food Quality and Safety, and and two first-level disciplines authorized to grant the master’s degree. At present, there are more than 1,600 graduate and undergraduate students in the College. In 2017, the Food Science and Engineering specialty passed the Engineering Education Accreditation of the Ministry of Education; In 2018, the "Virtual Simulation Experiment of Toast Bread Production Process" project, as one of the first batch, was approved by the Ministry of Education; In 2019, the Food Science and Engineering specialty was selected as a Sichuan Provincial first-class specialty in the Double Ten-Thousand Plan of the Ministry of Education; In 2020, the College was awarded the Comprehensive Reform Pilot College of the "Three All-round Education" by Sichuan Provincial Education Working Committee of the CPC.


The College features 107 full-time teachers, including 27 professors (4 of the second grade) and 80 teachers with doctor's degree, taking 75% of the total personnel. In recent years, the College welcomed 23 more experts of various kinds, including 2 with Special Government Allowance of the State Council, 2 post scientists of the National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System, 6 post experts of the Sichuan Innovation Team of the National Modern Agricultural Industry Technology System, and 1 chief expert of the Chengdu Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Alliance.


10 teachers of the College have led or participated in the preparation of industrial development technological roadmaps and major (key) project application guidelines for provinces and cities; offered consultations to the national, provincial and municipal governments for more than 100 times; written internal reference reports for the People's Government of Sichuan Province for six times, which were highly valued by and carried out under the supervision of the governor in charge. Recently, the College has established 28 state-level projects, including 6 general programs of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 19 youth foundation projects; established 68 provincial and ministerial-level projects, including 12 major projects (valued at millions of yuan) of science and technology industrial chain of Sichuan Province and 7 major rolling projects of industrial chains, creating a new record for the number of projects with the provincial and ministerial-level scientific research fund exceeding 1 million yuan; won 13 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological progress awards, including 1 first and 6 second prizes; appraised 15 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research achievements; received more than 58 million yuan worth of scientific research funds.


Considering the undergraduate student training, the College ranks first in the university in terms of the undergraduate students' admission rate in the postgraduate entrance examination every year. In 2020, it even reached 35.06%, and the Food Science and Engineering became the first to celebrate an admission rate of over 50%. The number of national and provincial innovative training programs the College students obtained accounted for 25% of the total number achieved by the University, and students of the College have won more than 30 awards annually in national and provincial competitions, won the championship in the University's sports meeting for five consecutive years, and the overall employment rate of graduates has remained above 90%. Regarding the postgraduate student training, the College's master's degree granting rate is increasing year by year, and has reached 91% in 2020. The one-time employment rate of graduate students remains above 90.0%. The total number of achievements realized by graduate students ranks first in the University every year. For example, the graduate students of 2016 published more than 50 academic papers and applied for 26 patents; those of 2017 published 23 academic papers, among which one included in an SCI journal achieved the impact factor of 7.279, setting a new record in the University.

Features of the College

1. The teachers of the College have won one second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Acarbose, 2014) and 13 Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Awards (2016-2020) successively;

2. The College was approved to establish the Key Laboratory for Meat Processing of Sichuan Province in 2008, the Key Laboratory of Coarse Cereals Processing of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs in 2016, and the Sichuan Province Meat Products Quality and Safety Engineering Laboratory in 2016;

3. In 2014, the College was authorized to grant the master's degree in Agriculture.
